Water dripper: plastic globe or terracotta spike?

Water dripper: plastic ball or terracotta tip?

Discover the differences between two popular water drippers and choose the best for your plants.

Watering your plants during your vacation or busy work week: it's a challenge every plant lover knows. A water dripper offers the solution, but which type should you choose? We compare two popular options: the closed plastic globe and the refillable dripper with a terracotta tip.

How does a water dripper work?

A water dripper operates on a simple yet clever principle. Water flows slowly from the reservoir into the ground. This occurs through the combination of gravity and the suction of dry soil.

The closed plastic globe contains the water in a sealed 250 ml reservoir. The narrow stem is inserted into the potting soil. As soon as the soil dries, a vacuum is created, and water flows out of the globe.

The terracotta tip water dripper functions slightly differently. The porous terracotta tip gradually releases water as the surrounding soil dries out. The water seeps through the clay wall to the roots. This version has a 200 ml reservoir.

Both systems respond to the moisture content of your potting soil. Dry soil absorbs more water, wet soil less. This way, your plants receive exactly what they need.

Plastic ball vs. terracotta spike: the practical differences

The biggest difference is in refilling. You fill the closed dripper by removing it from the ground, turning it over, and filling it with water. Then you put it back. This can be a bit awkward with larger plants or full pots.

The terracotta-tipped water dripper is easy to refill using the spout. Pour water into the opening while the dripper remains in the pot. Ideal for frequent, hassle-free refills.

In terms of capacity, the plastic 250 ml globe has a slightly larger reservoir than the 200 ml terracotta version. Depending on your plant and the temperature, this will last three to seven days. Do you have a large plant or a fast drinker? Then simply place multiple drippers in the same pot.

Please note when choosing:
The plastic bulb has a larger capacity (250 ml vs 200 ml). The terracotta version is easier to refill. Terracotta provides a more even water release. For large plants, you can place multiple drippers.

Which water dripper fits your situation?

The choice depends on your personal situation. Going away for a week and only have a few plants? Then a plastic ball will suffice thanks to its larger reservoir. Are you away from home more often or do you have a lot of houseplants? Then the refillable version with a terracotta tip is more convenient for daily use.

Both types are suitable for houseplants and potted outdoor plants. They work best in potting soil that retains water well. Don't insert the dripper too deeply, so the water reaches the roots without clogging the stem.

Feel free to try both variations to discover what works best for your green friends.
