How exactly does the Water Dripper work?

How exactly does the Water Dripper work?

The water dripper works based on physical vacuum. You fill the bulb with water and insert it into the ground. As soon as the potting soil dries out, the air permeates the surface, causing the dripper to automatically release a small amount of water. If the soil is moist enough, the water flow stops. This way, your plant never gets too much or too little water.

Step-by-step plan for use:

  • Fill the bulb completely with water through the tube
  • First poke a hole in the soil with a pencil or stick (important!)
  • Place the water dripper firmly with the point downwards
  • Make sure that the opening of the tube does not immediately become clogged with soil
  • Done! Your plant now regulates its own water intake.

Tip: Before leaving, give the plant normal water. Then place the dripper. This ensures a better vacuum and longer operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a water dripper provide water?
That depends on the plant, pot size, and temperature. A small houseplant in a compact pot can last for days, while a large plant in a larger pot absorbs the water faster. Therefore, always test it before traveling so you know how quickly your plants will empty the dripper.
Does the water dripper work for all plants?
Yes, the dripper is suitable for almost all houseplants and potted outdoor plants. The 27 cm long tube works best in medium to large pots (>15 cm deep). This system is less suitable for cacti and succulents, as these plants prefer to stay dry.
What if the pipe gets clogged with soil?
This can happen if you push the dripper too hard into dry soil. To prevent this, we recommend first poking a hole with a stick or pencil. If soil does get into the tube, don't worry. You can easily rinse the tube under the tap or clean it with a skewer. Groots® drippers are completely reusable.
Why doesn't my water dripper drip immediately?
That's actually a good sign! The dripper operates on a vacuum and only releases water when the soil dries out and allows air to pass through. Is the potting soil still moist? Then the vacuum keeps the water in the bulb. If it still doesn't drip after a few days and the plant is drooping, check that the opening of the tube isn't clogged with clayey soil.
Can I use the water dripper outside?
Yes, the dripper is ideal for flower boxes on the balcony or in the garden. One thing to keep in mind: the transparent bulb can act like a magnifying glass in very bright, direct sunlight. Ideally, place the drippers outdoors so that the bulb itself is slightly shaded by the leaves, or choose the blue or green version, which allows less light to pass through.
