How Does the Terracotta Water Dripper Work?

How Does the Terracotta Water Dripper Work?

The terracotta water dripper works differently than all-plastic versions. The porous terracotta tip absorbs water from the reservoir and slowly releases it into the surrounding soil. The drier the soil, the more water is released.

How to use the bird water dripper:

  • Soak the terracotta tip in water before first use
  • Poke a hole in the potting soil with a stick
  • Place the bird with the tip in the hole
  • Press the soil firmly around it
  • Pour water into the bird through the open beak

Tip: Make sure the potting soil is already moist before inserting the dripper. This ensures a better connection with the terracotta.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between terracotta and plastic water spikes?
A terracotta dripper dispenses water through the porous clay. The soil draws the water from the terracotta as needed. This is a more natural process than fully plastic drippers that operate on vacuum.

The advantage of terracotta is its even, gradual release. The disadvantage is that terracotta is brittle. Therefore, be careful when placing it in the potting soil.
How do I refill the bird water dripper?
Refilling is very easy. The beak is always open, so you simply pour water into it. The bird doesn't need to be removed from the ground. Grab a watering can or bottle and fill the reservoir through the beak.

This is much more convenient than closed water drippers that you have to remove every time to fill.
Which plants is this water dripper suitable for?
The bird water dropper is suitable for most houseplants that require regular watering, such as Monstera, Calathea, peace lily, ferns, and other green plants.

We don't recommend this dripper for cacti and succulents. These plants prefer dry soil and will receive too much moisture with a dripper.
How long does a full water dripper last?
That depends on the plant, pot size, and temperature. Small houseplants in a compact pot can last for several days. Larger plants or plants in a warm location use up water more quickly.

Always test how quickly your specific plant absorbs water before you leave.
Can the terracotta tip get clogged?
Terracotta is porous and can develop some mineral deposits after prolonged use. You'll notice this because the water release slows down.

You can then soak the tip in water with a dash of vinegar to reopen the pores. To prevent clogging, don't press the tip too deeply into very compacted soil.
